Graduate applicants may be required to submit test scores depending on the program’s requirements. These include GRE, and for non-native English speakers, TOEFL, IELTS, or DET. Check the specific program requirements for further details on required or optional tests.
Important: Test scores must be sent directly from the testing organization and received at least three weeks before the application deadline to ensure timely processing. Faculty may begin reviewing applications without the scores if they arrive late.
GRE Requirements
The GRE may be required, optional, or not accepted depending on the program. Please consult the GRE Requirement Table for details:
Required: Applicants must submit valid GRE scores, which are mandatory for consideration. Waivers are not allowed.
Optional: GRE scores are not required but may be reviewed if submitted. Applicants who choose not to submit scores will not be at a disadvantage.
Not Accepted: GRE scores will not be reviewed, even if submitted.
GRE Planning and Deadlines:
Home Testing: GRE General Test at Home is accepted.
Score Validity: GRE scores are valid for five years. Departments will consider the highest score from each section.
English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit valid English language test scores unless they meet one of the following exemptions:
English is the primary language of communication.
Undergraduate or graduate study was completed entirely in English for at least two academic years.
Accepted tests include:
- TOEFL iBT (including Home Edition)
- IELTS Academic (including IELTS Online)
- Duolingo English Test (DET)
Minimum Scores:
- TOEFL Speaking: 27+
- IELTS Speaking: 8.0+
- DET Conversation: 125+
Scores below these thresholds may require additional testing upon enrollment and placement in UOS’s English Language Program (ELP).
Score Submission & Validity
All test scores must be sent directly from the testing organizations. Expired scores, self-reported scores, or partial test scores are not accepted.
GRE/TOEFL Institution Code: 2672 (No department code required)
IELTS: Submit scores through e-delivery. No physical copies or Test Report Forms (TRFs) will be accepted.
DET: Submit electronically through Duolingo.
Scores typically take up to two weeks to arrive and an additional seven days to match to your application. Check the Application Portal to confirm receipt.
Tracking Test Scores
How to Check Receipt: After submitting your application, test dates will appear on your checklist if scores have been received. Dates will not appear until the scores are matched.
Discrepancies: If your name differs between the application and test report, email [ADMISSIONS EMAIL] with your name, test date, and date of birth.
Technical Issues: Contact [ADMISSIONS EMAIL] if scores are missing after three weeks from the test date and seven days after application submission.
